Game Development

May 9, 2018

Hello, my name is Noah Kriska, founder of Kriska Games.

My Intent on creating Kriska Games is to create games that focus on core game mechanics and ideas. A game should have a key concept or challenge. Games need to focus in on what makes it fun, and sift through everything else that makes it less fun.

Here at Kriska Games, we believe all content in all games should be unlockable by playing the game. Although we won't commit to never using micro-transactions, nothing will ever be hidden behind a paywall. All content will always be obtainable without the need to spend additional money after you already purchased the game.

Kriska Games will have titles heavily influenced by classic games of generations old. We will take games that had moderate to raging success at what it does and analyze them. We will determine what made them great, where they well short, what holds up and what doesn't. We will use the knowledge as a stepping stone to create games of similar style that should take everything that worked and weed out everything that didn't. Think about the success of Shovel Knight, a modern-retro game that emulated a lot that was right from the 80s era of games, while simultaneously weeding out many of the disliked quirks of the time. All while expanding upon and improving the genre with more modern innovative features.

Kriska Games has a few goals to accomplish prior to tackling any of their true game ideas. Although there are currently no dead-lines to accomplish their goals, Kriska Games does have a few stepping stones it would like to pass prior to doing any serious work on any serious titles.

Step 1:
Learn the basics to the Unreal Engine

Kriska Games plans on utilizing the free Unreal Engine to learn how to make games. Learning the basics and creating many different basic and simple games of various genres will give Kriska Games some solid "know-how" on both the process of game development as well as what can and can not be accomplished.

Step 2:
Set Goals to create simpler versions of the games people already love.

Kriska Games believes that imitation is the best form of flattery. We want to find other games and study the process that goes behind creating a game of their caliber. We plan on imitating their game to gain an understanding of how to make certain styles of games, all while becoming more confident in our ability and building onto our internal knowledge library.

Step 3:
Create simple versions of the games we want to create.

Once we have the know how to make games, practice on actually doing the work, and have achieved a fair work-flow pace, we will set aside some time to plan out the games we truly want to create. We will focus on the absolute core of the game first, and expand upon that. The first game we will make is a simple tower defense game. We want to make sure the game itself is what is the most fun, and will ignore a lot of the visual aspects of the game. The main focus isn't to look like a pretty game, but rather to have a fun game with proper challenge and progression. We want to hit the head on the nail before we paint over it all.

Step 4:
Polish the gameplay and interface.

A good game has good gameplay, and feels smooth. We want to make sure that the TD game runs well, is simple enough for a beginner to pick up, hard enough to keep the masters challenged, and clean enough that the screen does not look cluttered. We will focus on making sure the controls make sense, and that power users will be able to utilize their APM to their highest of their ability.

Kriska Games has 2 solid game ideas, and 3 potential project ideas in mind.

  1. Simple Tower Defense Game
  2. SSX Spiritual Successor

  1. MOBA style game with a Tower Defense Focus / Influence
  2. Open-World Adventure / Mystery JRPG
  3. Online and In-Person Classes on Video Game Development

One of the First projects that Kriska Games wants to achieve is to make a solid title in the Tower Defense genre. Tower Defense games are simple in concept, and often feel like the same game from one tower defense game to the next. Kriska Games's goal is to look at the formula of what makes a tower defense game fun and challenging, while also making it fair.
